As i am doing ssc in paeds now, i'll list down all the tips n topics which i think important for paeds (i bet it's goin to be useful especially to 4th yrs)
- recognise sick child-in children, the most important thing is observation, to be able to recognise this, u have to know how a fit n healthy child looks like first
- for history and examination, these needs lots of practice....especially auscultation of the chest...honestlt i find it difficult, kids heart beats faster than adults...this can mislead u if they hv murmur...can also make it difficult to listen to the breath sound...n also able to distract them esp babies, smile at them, believe me they r gonna like u
- they always come in with vague symptoms-headache, pyrexia, diarrhoea, vomiting-common things are common, but dun miss out life threatening condition
- for topics, let's go by system:
- resp-acute exacerbation of asthma, bronchiolitis n other URTIs
- cvs-congenital heart disease
- GI-gastroenteritis, gi obstruction
- cns-meningitis, cerebral palsy
- development-developmental delay, failure to thrive, short stature (memorise children development), practice this by guessing the child age before u ask their parents
- gui-uti
- endo-diabetes
- ms-rarely, usually trauma, autoimmune condition ie juvenile arthritis
- nai (non accidental injury)
- memorise immunisation schedule ( i do have problems with this..huhu)
- neonates:
- problems with premature babies
- jaundice
- hypoglycaemia
- low birth weight, IUGR
- last but not least-remember children are not small adults, treat them as they are...
